Rescue Baby Wallaby from Improper Care

Target: University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel

Goal: Have students release all information about baby wallaby so he can get a properly placed into zoo.

A photo was released of a two-month-old baby wallaby in the arms of a University of Michigan student, and PETA has since been trying to ensure he gets released into proper care of a zoo that can give him the 24-hour attention he needs.

Two students acquired and then tried to sell the wallaby online for over $2000, drawing the attention of the animal activism group. The baby still needs to be bottled fed and constantly watched–needs that would be met by his mother but cannot be properly handled by private citizens.

PETA urged the students to sell them the animal for $500, but they responded by threatening to sell him to a roadside zoo as an attraction. After further pressure, they were informed by the school the animal was now in safe hands. They found the wallaby had been returned to animal trader who sold it off to students in the first place.

University of Michigan could have made an example of the proper way to handle cases of exotic animal possession and given the wallaby off to the Detroit Zoo for proper care, but instead he was returned to most likely be sold off again to be part of someone’s private collection.

Urge the university to get the students to give all information they have about the buyer, the purchase, and the wallaby to PETA instead of continuing to shut them out and prevent progress. Hopefully with support and the help of the school they can legally obtain the wallaby and give him to the Detroit Zoo.

Dear President Mark Schlissel,

Recently, two of your students acquired an exotic wallaby from a trader, and when PETA tried to acquire it, your school did not assist them in getting the animal a proper home. Now he is back in the hands of an animal trader.

This wallaby will most likely be sold to a private collector as a pet instead of given a life with other animals of his kind. Your school and students have stonewalled the efforts of PETA who were trying to aid in getting him a more suitable home and in doing so have aided in the exotic animal trade.

Encourage your students and school to be forthcoming about obtaining this animal and aiding PETA in whatever way they can to ensure the wallaby gets to the zoo instead of someone’s backyard. He is an exotic animal who needs intensive care and only a trained professional will be able to provide it.
