Target: Dacian Ciolos, Agriculture Commissioner of the European Union
Goal: Stop funding bullfighting with taxpayers’ money
Bullfighting has been around for centuries. Spanish style bullfighting began in the 1700s, but the practice can be traced as far back as the Roman empire and even prehistoric Mesopotamia. Some people consider bullfighting a traditional and precious art. While bull fighting is certainly something that has become tradition, the torture and mutilation of a beautiful living creature cannot be called art and should not be sponsored by taxpayers.
The European Union (EU) currently subsidizes bullfighting using taxpayer money. It renovates bullrings and spends approximately $50 million per year to support the ¨traditional sport.¨ Some people are even urging the EU to recognize bullfighting as a representation of European cultural heritage. Sadly, all of this funding and discussions about bullfighting as a sacred part of Europe’s cultural heritage leads to over 40,000 bulls being killed each year. This is a barbaric and antiquated tradition that must come to an end.
There is no question that the bullfighting that takes place produces pain, suffering, and the loss of thousands of lives. The killing of bulls should not be treated as a form of entertainment and it should definitely not be funded by taxpayers. Most tax payers are against bullfighting, but every year their money goes towards the killing of more and more animals. Please, sign this petition and tell the EU to stop funding bullfighting.
Dear Commissioner Ciolos,
Bullfighting is a cruel and torturous form of entertainment. The killing of 40,000 bulls each year in the name of tradition, culture, and good fun is appalling. Spain is fighting to have these massacres labeled as displays of cultural heritage, but even Spaniards don’t support the sport. Only 29% of Spaniards are in favor of bull fighting.
The EU pours tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money into bull fighting each year. This is against the will of taxpayers and wastes significant funds on an inhumane and predominantly unsupported sport. I do not support bullfighting and I am disgusted that so much money goes to support this barbaric practice. I urge you to stop funding bullfighting and to help reduce the cruelty to animals that is perpetuated by this practice.
