Target: Hassan Rouhani, President of Iran
Goal: Stop Iran from endangering a monkey by sending it into space
Iran’s space agency plans to put a second innocent monkey’s life at risk by sending it into space. Earlier in 2013, the agency claimed to have sent a monkey into space and brought it back safely. However, the before-and-after pictures clearly depicted two different monkeys. It can only be assumed that the first monkey did not survive the journey. Stop Iran from sending yet another monkey into space when their past efforts have failed.
The deputy head of Iran’s space agency, Hamid Fazeli, told an Iranian newspaper that he planned to send another monkey into space within a month and a ship with humans by 2018. The agency has never been able to prove that its prior space mission involving a monkey was successful and that the monkey returned alive. Iran’s September 2011 mission failed as well.
Iran has been accused of trying to use monkey space experiments to master the technology needed to create a nuclear warhead attack. Although Iran denies this, it has promised to put three satellites into space by March 2014.
Sign the below petition to urge Iran’s president to stop sending monkeys into space. Primate space flights were common between 1948 and 1961. Modern space technology does not require innocent animals to be endangered unnecessarily.
Dear President Rouhani,
I am urging you to prevent the Iranian space agency from sending more monkeys into space. Not only are space flights unsafe for monkeys, but they are also outdated and unnecessary due to modern space flight technology.
Monkey space experiments were conducted by the United States, France, and Russia in the mid-twentieth century. Too many monkeys of various breeds have lost their lives in the name of science. Monkeys do not belong in laboratories, and they do not belong on space missions. They belong in the wild, where they can be free and live natural lives.
Iran’s monkey space launch from earlier this year was surrounded with much controversy. Regardless of your country’s motives for ramping up space exploration efforts, please leave monkeys out of it. You must prohibit your aviation agency from harming any more innocent monkeys in space missions. Encourage the agency to employ more human and technically-efficient strategies for space exploration experiments.
