Thank Veterinarian for Healing Blinded, Abused Bears

Moon Bear

Target: Dr. Claudia Hartley

Goal: Thank the veterinarian who gave blinded, abused moon bears their sight back

Dr. Claudia Hartley recently became the first veterinarian ever to perform cataract surgery on a moon bear. Her efforts have given eight abused bears their sight back after it was cruelly stolen from them at horrific Chinese bile farms.

About 20,000 endangered moon bears are currently trapped at bile farms, where they are starved and locked in cramped cages so their gallbladder bile may be painfully harvested for use in shampoos, toothpastes, and eye drops. About 40 percent of bile bears eventually die from liver damage, and surviving bears commonly lose their eyesight due to cataracts caused by the constant infections, trauma, and malnutrition.

Thankfully, compassionate individuals like Hartley are fighting back against these disgusting farms. Hartley is an ophthalmology specialist from England, but made the decision to travel to southeast Asia to perform surgery on blinded bears that had been rescued from bile farms. She has restored the sight of eight bears so far, who are currently experiencing life for the first time at a sanctuary in Chengdu, China, where they can play or relax in pools and hammocks in their enclosures.

Hartley has traveled to the region six times since 2008 and intends to continue restoring sight to as many bears as possible in the future. Thank Hartley for her compassionate efforts to greatly improve the quality of life of these beautiful creatures.

Dear Dr. Hartley,

As an animal welfare advocate, I sincerely thank you for everything you’ve done to drastically improve the quality of life of blinded moon bears rescued from cruel bile farms in China.

I applaud you for the courage it took to become the first veterinarian to perform cataract surgery on a moon bear. Because of your strength and compassion, these poor creatures are getting to experience life for the first time and see the world around them while they do so. As you know, having the freedom to experience things like playing in a pool or resting in a hammock at the sanctuary in Chengdu, China, gives rescued bears a quality of life they may have never known before, and having their sight restored after it was so cruelly stolen from them at bile farms greatly increases that quality of life.

Thank you for committing to continue your compassionate work for these beautiful creatures.
