Save Dingoes from Imminent Extinction

Target: Greg Hunt, Australia’s Minister for the Environment

Goal: List dingoes as endangered in all Australian states.

Dingoes are dying off at massive rates, however, they are only listed as endangered in some areas of Australia. If this does not change, these beautiful animals will likely soon be extinct.

There are great benefits to keeping dingoes around, including the fact that they eat feral animals, making it so other native animals are less likely to be eaten by predators. Dingoes also ensure that fewer diseases are spread to human and animal populations by doing this, since feral animals carry a wide variety of disease hosts.

Unfortunately, dingoes are often killed by people when they get too close to livestock or humans. However, they usually keep their distance from areas where humans live and only get too close when they are offered food by people or when they are provoked in some other way. If people were required to fence in their livestock and were better educated as to why they shouldn’t feed dingoes, these problems would greatly mitigate.

Sign the petition below to urge the Minister for the Australian Environment to change the dingoes’ conservation status to endangered in all areas of Australia. If they continue to be treated as common pests, saving them tomorrow will likely not be an option.

Dear Minister Hunt,

Despite dingoes dying off at rapid rates, they are only fully protected in some areas of Australia. If this does not change soon, it is highly likely that these beautiful animals will not be around much longer.

Dingoes help to maintain the balance of the overall environment by killing feral animals. Doing this not only makes it so fewer native animals are eaten by invasive species, but it also ensures that there are fewer diseases spread by feral animals to human and other animal populations.

Making it illegal to kill dingoes, in addition to other protective measures, will help both dingoes and humans. Requiring people to fence in their livestock, educating people about the importance of keeping their dogs on leashes to prevent interbreeding, and discouraging people from offering dingoes their food scraps, are all ways to better ensure that both people and dingoes are able to thrive peacefully in the same environment.

For these reasons, I encourage you to support making dingoes endangered in all Australian states. If more is not done to help these animals now, they will likely not be around to enjoy or to help the environment later.
