Demand Repairs to Damaged Dam Killing Thousands of Salmon

Target: The Army Corps of Engineers

Goal: Repair Buckley Dam to save salmon from getting killed

The Army Corps of Engineers’ Buckley Dam, built in 1911 on the White River, is severely damaged and constantly killing the salmon who try to pass it.  Several species of salmon including the endangered Chinook species are dying at the dam before reaching their spawning grounds up the river. Located in Seattle, Washington, the dam has been damaged for an extended period of time, and its repair is an urgent matter.

The main issue is the broken fish trap on the dam, which batters up fish who try to pass through. This kills some salmon and severely injures the ones that make it through. Millions of dollars are spent restoring the White River ecosystem in other ways – efforts which are useless since the damaged dam is just creating more problems.

It is disappointing that the dam has been damaged for so long. The fact that the threatened Chinook Species of salmon are affected and efforts still are not being made to help prevent them from becoming extinct is even more disappointing.

It is crucial that the dam be fixed to stop the killing of salmon. Salmon is a fish that is used for everyday human consumption, so this issue affects us on more than just an ecological level. Please sign the petition below to demand that efforts be made to repair the dam and save the lives of thousands of salmon.

Dear Army Corps of Engineers,

As you know, your Buckley Dam on the White River is severely damaged. It is killing thousands of salmon who attempt to pass through including the endangered Chinook species. Millions of dollars in repairs are constantly being spent on the white river, so the fact that the damaged dam is not being repaired is baffling.

The repair of this dam is something that is long overdue. Thousands of salmon, a fish that even has beneficial human uses, have been affected and eliminated from their ecosystem.

We demand that you make the efforts necessary to fully repair the dam and stop the killing of salmon.

I agree with Matt: remove the dam, the salmon will appreciate.

  2. Surely repairs to this dam fish trap/pass would not be to hard to fix and upkeep? Why do humans find lots of ways to waste lots of money on useless stuff but don’t have the funds or inclination for important things like keeping a beautiful fish that has run these river systems for millenniums. The powers that be in charge of this task are it seems just sitting around procrastinating. These people need another brain because the one they have at the moment is bereft of common sense and any sensibility, absolutely none. Sad that humans can be so apathetic and uncaring just because it’s only a few fish…Well these fish have every right to be able to complete their long journey to breed and keep their species going and to let their tired weary bodies feed all the animals that depend on them. Man has to work with nature not against it.
