In the region where sheep and goats were first domesticated, a sick streak of animal cruelty has continued, and perpetrators typically emerge unscathed. Reports and viral videos of poisoned stray dogs, unchecked dog-fighting, chickens crammed into tiny cages, and goats brutally stomped represent just a few of the cruelties perpetrated with no criminal penalty in Kurdistan. This independent offshoot of Iraq has no animal welfare laws on the books.
For over a decade, a veterinarian who escaped the rule of Saddam Hussein has fought for the establishment of a Kurdish animal rights bill. If enacted, the legislation would formally safeguard animals from fear, distress, inadequate care and shelter, pain and suffering, and other states of being that typically define animal cruelty in a legal sense. A welfare council would be largely responsible for overseeing these standards, implementing penalties for violations, and imposing strict regulations on zoos, breeders, and other individuals or groups responsible for the care of animals. Common abuses like dog-fighting, slaughterhouse atrocities, and inhumane hunting practices would also be targeted.
After years of inaction, this important initiative finally has a path forward with actual political supporters and with a planned debate and vote upcoming. Sign the petition below to support a framework that could save the lives of countless at-risk animals.

Dear Dr. Hussein,
Sulaiman Tameer, veterinarian and leader of Kurdistan’s premier animal welfare organization, has spent over ten years trying to make his labor of love, a comprehensive animal rights bill, a reality. Supportive ministers have helped evolve this ambition from a fading dream to a promising possibility. You may wonder why this legislation should matter to you.
For one, you can likely agree that Kurdistan’s agricultural sector is in serious need of reform due to lagging performance. Healthy domesticated animals will only increase the health of this sector. Most importantly, the lack of regard and respect for all living beings runs counter to Islam and reflects badly upon the region as a whole. Images of severed animal heads, government-sanctioned poisonings, and hateful cruelty imposed upon animals ranging from dogs to goats are a disgrace and an affront to basic human compassion and decency.
Please help your region liberate its most vulnerable and at-risk inhabitants from the chains of oppression and inhumanity. Give your backing to the animal welfare bill when it comes to a vote.

Totally agree with Chessie….this isn’t about the cruelty in America or other countries, which we all know exists and needs to be stopped, this is about Kurdistan and the hideuos cruelty there and Shelly needs to bear this in mind and not waste time slagging off other people who signed this petition. How does she KNOW these people eat bacon??? They probably don’t and before she wants to verbally attack me, I don’t eat animals either. Sean is right….we should ALL be vegan. I wonder if Shelly is????????????
Anyone with a brain and heart would not treat any living being like that. Stop your barbaric ways as the world is watching. All animals should be treated with kindness, I speak for the voiceless and only wish that people who mistreat animals rot in hell and you will.
I so agree with Shelley Blazich and don’t really care what words she uses – the issue is she is right on with what she is saying. The treatment of all animals is disgusting beyond belief. Again it always comes down to human greed and money and sadly the animals all pay the price with their lives. It is so inhumane and humans are just a bunch of god damn losers when it comes to so many animals. Our governments “suck” at most things that they do so we can’t rely on them for any help what-so-ever. It is so incredibly sad to even start to realize the abuse that goes on with the animals of this planet. Humans need to be destroyed on so many different levels.

This is disgustingly cruel and heartless and unconscionable. Some of the Middle Eastern Countries done have any regard for animal eell being or emotional health and state of being. They are treated like garbage, and it is UNACCEPTABLE. Laws need to be implemented and enforced in those Countries. Horrible and heart-breaking and INFURIATING.

Unfortunately everything stated in this petition is correct and there are more cruelty against animals in those countries. I saw that in my eyes because I worked some of them and I visited others: Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt. It’s above cruelty what the animals all including cats and donkeys are facing everyday in those countries with blessing of governments and religious leaders of those countries to these brutal behaviors
Did you know there are ARAB animal rescuers? Did you know that in Williamsburg, Brooklyn Hasidic Jews consider feral cats vermin and put out poison?
Poison people are all over the world!! 20% of dogs in shelters are euthanized – 70% of cats in shelters are euthanized!! The life span of feral cats and dogs are 2 years – then they die of natural causes if they are not killed by people!! Animals do not gave any rights!! The general public does not care about animals – that’s why they are used for meat – leather – medical experiments – and dairy products! If you don’t already know this you are really ignorant!!!
These cursed regions don’t care about people or animals – never have – never will!! Its the arm pit of the world!! Cruelty and chaos is a daily normalcy – life will never get better in these regions because its been a mess since Biblical times!!!
Joyce, I totally agree with you…Those people in the Middle East, for example, have had hundreds & hundreds of years to use some critical thinking, seeing cause & effect, so as to improve on their views & behaviors towards animals in general, & obviously they have not, & likely will not…Some countries & cultures are just simply horrendous about humanitarianism towards people & animals!…..
As an animal lover, I’m glad that Kurdistan is in the process of enacting an animal rights bill. People need to realize that we share this world with other living things and they have the right to live without being subjected to abuse and neglect. Those who inflict pain and suffering on these innocent animals need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Animals are generally not protected anywhere. We, human beings, allow animals to be eaten, experimented upon, and tortured in any number of vicious ways. It is too bad the animals can’t turn on us and give us a taste of our own medicine.
