26 Abused and Malnourished Animals Deserve Justice

Kitten in Jail

Target: Derek Champagne, District Attorney of Franklin County

Goal: Give the accused couple heavy sentences if found guilty of the abuse of 26 neglected and malnourished animals.

Recently, a couple from Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks was arrested with 52 counts of animal cruelty. The couple had altercations with the law in the past involving stolen goods, and the current charges were brought about from the police investigating the same crime on the couples’ property. Along with the stolen goods, the police also found sick and emaciated cats, chickens, and other animals.

James A. Beausoleil and Irene F. Birdou are repeat offenders of the law, and this additional crime of animal cruelty is simply inexcusable. All of the cats had some sort of respiratory infection and were in critical condition. The other animals, including chickens, a rabbit, and pigs, were also severely malnourished. Most of the animals were constrained in small areas without any food and water and were stepping on their own feces. The animals were removed from the home as soon as was legally permitted, given food and water, and are under the care of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake and another animal shelter. Under good care, the pets have started to drink and eat normally and have started to look more healthy.

Beausoleil and Birdou each face 26 counts of animal cruelty, one count for each animal that was seized from their property. They are held in jail under $5,000 cash bond as they await their trial.

Please sign the petition below to urge the District Attorney of Franklin County to give this animal abusing couple heavy sentences if they are found guilty, to ensure that they do not commit another crime again. This is not the first time the couple had a run-in with the law, and there should be severe consequences for deplorable treatment of these helpless animals.

Dear Derek Champagne,

The uncovering of the hellish conditions of the animals on the property of James A. Beausoleil and Irene F. Birdou was quite the shock. The animal-abusing couple Beausoleil and Birdou have caused severe damages to their many pets, and these animals deserve justice for the horrors that they had to suffer through while in the couples’ home. All the cats had respiratory infections, many with eyes swollen so much that they were shut. All the animals were severely malnourished and if help had not come any sooner, more animals would most likely have died.

Beausoleil and Birdou are repeat offenders of the law, so they are clearly not learning from their past mistakes. Please ensure that Beausoleil and Birdou receive severe sentences if they’re found guilty so that they do not commit another crime again. The abused animals deserve justice for their horrid treatment.
