Stop Agriculture Industry’s Free Pass for Animal Abuse

Target: Shemia Fagan, Secretary of State for Oregon

Goal: Put stronger animal cruelty regulations for agriculture industry to a vote.

Oregon could soon become a sanctuary state for animals, particularly the estimated 1.4 million cattle exploited yearly. A recently proposed ballot initiative would codify livestock protections into law. Specifically, the Abuse, Neglect, and Assault Exemption Modification and Improvement Act would remove animal cruelty exemptions currently enjoyed by farmers and agricultural industrialists from state law.

The anti-cruelty statute in Oregon as it stands now prohibits the following: “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes serious physical injury to an animal or cruelly causes the death of an animal.” This legal definition for first-degree animal cruelty is applied to most suspects….unless they happen to be employed in agriculture. Unfortunately, agri-business has produced some of the most heinous instances of animal cruelty, from horrific slaughterhouse conditions to sexual abuse.

These living beings deserve to have their lives valued. Sign the petition below to help ensure the agriculture industry is held accountable for its troubling history of unchecked animal cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Fagan,

Oregon has enacted strong anti-cruelty laws to safeguard any “nonhuman mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish” from pain and suffering. Additional statutes have even enhanced protections for vulnerable animal populations like race-horses. This state cares about all of its living beings, so why are animals raised on farms not afforded the same considerations? Why are individuals in the agriculture industry put above the law?

This special interest industry will try to deter regulation with exaggerated claims about the end of farming. The most important achievement the proposed Abuse, Neglect, and Assault Exemption Modification and Improvement Act would make possible, however, is simple: accountability. Agri-business would no longer enjoy the wholesale exemptions from animal cruelty that enable it to potentially hurt and exploit animals without regard or punishment. Too many videos and exposes have emerged to deny the grim reality of the abuses often taking place behind closed doors in this industry….horrible acts that Oregon deems perfectly legal.

The state that pioneered ballot initiatives should once again lead the way. Please sign off on this crucial initiative that says “no more” and help ensure it has a place on the ballot.  Let Oregon’s citizens have their say.

Sincerely,

  1. Just because animals are slaughtered for food does NOT mean they are there to be abused and tortured prior to killing. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR ABUSE… OF ANY ANIMAL… EVER…. FOR ANY MAN MADE REASON.

    • I too agree with Sharon. why in the hell do humans have to be so damn cruel to these animals?? I don’t get it..the farming industry needs to stop for so many reasons….it is killing our environment and the meat people are eating is not safe anymore. I have not had animal meat for many years now due to knowing how cruel these animals are treated before slaughtered.. it is disgusting….

They are degenerate people who had no education, much less values; They do what they saw their heartless parents do just because they don’t do any better!

  4. jackie Pflucker says:

They are evil, vile, sadistic people who enjoy the suffering of poor animals – a way of satisfying their low instincts. In other words: C O W A R D S!

  5. Teresa Zamalloa says:

They are perverse and sadistic people who enjoy mistreating whoever they can, be it a human or a poor animal – God knows how they were created, what home they come from, who their parents were, what kind of parents did they have, what example they gave them – is people who deserve to be behind bars

  6. Oregon has upgraded its animal rights to a higher degree. This needs to include those animals slaughtered for food. Animals facing death, know it, and are frightened. Yet when the stun guns don’t work the animals are taken through the kill line without any assistance. Animals need to be respected not tortured. This is not a job I would want but those who take on this job need to be paid and have benefits added too. But this job does not allow men to rape animals, shoot them in the head 3 or 4 times ineffectively yet allow them to be strung up by a leg and go on to have their throats slit. There needs to be laws and cameras as this might help.

    • I agree that the farm animals are smart enough to know what’s going on. They’re called “sentient beings” because they feel emotions like humans: fear, horror, terror, distress, etc. But in factory farms they mostly suffer agonizing pain & TORTURE – unimaginable CRUELTY at the hands of extremely EVIL, sadistic monsters👹-especially those in charge. We have video evidence from HIDDEN cameras that have been smuggled in by groups like Mercy for Animals. I totally disagree that the solution is paying the abusers more with better benefits.

  7. These vile scumbag, mentally deranged animal killers must be exterminated. They must have a slow and agonising death performed and then used as garden fertiliser

  8. VILE PEOPLE, WHO DO NOT EVEN LIVE UP TO BEING A TRUSTING ANIMAL. YOU WILL SUFFER YOUR OWN KARMA AND THERE IS NO ESCAPE….BE SURE OF THAT. YOU ARE WICKED AND EVIL….THINK ON
