Save Wild Pigeons from Thoughtless Slaughter

Wood Pigeon

Target: Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard Van der Laan

Goal: Stop an Amsterdam pest control company from killing wild pigeons and selling them to local butchers where they are mislabeled and sold as “wild pate”

Amsterdam pest control company Duke Faunabeheer is killing wild pigeons and selling them to local butcher shops where the pigeon meat is falsely advertised as “wild pate,” a delicacy associated with wood pigeons from the countryside. It is believed that Duke Faunabeheer kills as many 1,000 wild pigeons for local meat consumption each year.

Although the pest company claims that its actions help regulate the wild pigeon population, experts believe that killing pigeons does little to effectively control their populations. The U.S. National Pest Control Association states that blocking roosting spots with barriersa tactic known as “exclusion”is the best method to control the pigeon population.

Wild pigeons pose no serious threat to urban environments and killing or relocating them won’t have any long-term effects on their populations. The problem is not only that the hunting is an ineffective method of controlling the wild pigeon population, but also that selling their meat as “wild pate” misleads the public and encourages even more unnecessary murders.

By signing this petition, you will be urging Amsterdam officials to prevent the murder of wild pigeons and ban the sale of “wild pate.”

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Van der Laan,

Amsterdam pest control company Duke Faunabeheer is believed to be responsible for the murder of more than 1,000 wild pigeons each year. The birds are hunted, killed and then sold to nearby butchers where their meat is falsely advertised as “wild pate,”a local delicacy associated with wood pigeons from the countryside.

Although Duke Faunabeheer claims that its actions help regulate the wild pigeon population in urban environments, killing pigeons actually does little to effectively control their numbers. According to experts, a tactic known as “exclusion,” which involves the blocking of roosting spots with barriers, is the best method to control wild pigeon populations.

Pigeons pose no serious threat to urban environments and killing or relocating them won’t affect their populations long-term. The problem is not only that the hunting is an ineffective method of controlling the wild pigeon population, but also that selling their meat as “wild pate” misleads the public and encourages even more unnecessary murders.

Please put an end to these unnecessary killings and stop misleading consumers by banning the sale of urban pigeon meat as “wild pate.”

Sincerely,

    • These birds are so sweet, good pets, and intelligent.
Have you forgotten how they helped in war times? I wouldn’t want that for them again but a gentler and kinder solution should and can be found. These birds
are not understood or appreciated. People need to learn and appreciate them. Thank you.

  8. I wrote directly to the Mayor of Amsterdam about this matter, and his office replied:
    “Dear Mrs. Beck,
In your e-mail dated 2 February you write Mayor Van der Laan about the pigeons in Amsterdam in combination with the sale of ‘wild pate’.
The Mayor asked me to foward your e-mail to Alderman Mr. Eric van der Burg, who handles the portfolie ‘Dierenwelzijn’ (Animal well-being). Your e-mail will be answered by Mr. Van der Burg or, on his behalf, by his staff. You should receive an answer within six weeks. When it is not possible to reply to your letter with this time, you will receive further notice.”
So, now I wait again, but hopefully not for long! I will post the response here!

    • I have now received a reply from the manager of pest control department, who tells me that since 2010 the goal of Animal Pest Control, Amsterdam is not to kill any animals but solve all problems in a preventive and friendly manner without using too many chemicals.
However, first of all let me confirm that pigeons in Amsterdam are considered a pest animal. They are on the list together with mice, rats, sea-gulls, rabbits, cockroaches, ants, ducks, moles, ticks, moths, lady bugs, geese, wasps, etc. etc. FYI, here’s a link to the website for pestcontrol/extermination (in Dutch): http://www.ggd.amsterdam.nl/menu-ii/dierplaagbeheersing/.
In his reply, the manager of pest control does not specifically answer my question regarding pest control company Duke Faunabeheer, but it is clear from what he writes and from above website that killing 1000 pigeons to get rid of them as pests, is not the way Amsterdam wishes to handle a pigeon-problem, in fact it is very much against current pest-control policies from 2010. So far, so good!
I wrote back to the manager of pest control and asked him to comment specifically on this matter re. Duke Faunabeheer, and also told him that I wish to bring a formal complaint against this company, and also a formal complaint against the butchers who sell the dead pigeons (pests) in their ‘wild pate’.
I also filled out an official e-form to Amsterdam’s pest control with the same complaints. I had to write a fake Amsterdam zip-code as I do not live in Amsterdam!
So now I wait for a response again, but I think we made some progress!
By the way, just to compare with another European big city like Copenhagen, I enquired what Copenhagen city does to pigeons when they die for any reason. They are thrown away, and never, never eaten by anybody, man or beast!

      • Helene Beck Helene Beck says:

Nobody ever responded to my ‘formal complaints’ against Duke Faunabeherr and butchers/deli stores in Amsterdam. However, by googling this matter I found out that ‘Animals Amsterdam’ are handling the issue about killing pigeons.
I wonder if anybody has managed to formally complain about the dead city pigeons in wild pates?

  9. HOPE the pigeons of this country are no longer the subject of torture and cruelty. My posts may be coming late… The thing is we must not quit until these horrible injustices ends once and for all for each and every animal.
