End Live Animal Trade in Australia

Target: Australian Parliament member Andrew Wilkie

Goal: Pass a bill that would ban the import and export of live animals in Australia

Following the release of two news reports documenting the horrible circumstances animals destined for live export endure, independent member of the Australian Parliament Andrew Wilkie has proposed a bill that would end live trade in Australia. Wilkie has pushed for strong animal welfare laws in the past with little success. This particular law would keep thousands of animals protected from unnecessary torture each year, and deserves our support.

One of the videos, shot by investigators with Animals Australia, shows sheep in Jordan having their throats slit multiple times, being beaten, and being dragged across the ground and thrown into the backs of trucks.  Sadly, incidents like this are far from rare. These animals spend their lives subjected to rough handling, and are thrown, dragged, abused, transported, and packed in the backs of trucks and car trunks.

Unfortunately, Wilkie currently does not have the government’s support. Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the Minister of Agriculture both support the industry and believe that such a law would be foolish. In a statement responding to Abbott’s comments, Wilkie said, “There’s no doubt that Australia’s live export animal trade is systematically cruel. There’s no doubt that ending it has popular support. I’m appalled that we have another Australian government that doesn’t give a toss about animal welfare.”

What Wilkie and several animal welfare organizations hope will occur is a transition to a chilled meat trade, which would not only be much more humane, it would also benefit the economy due to lower shipping costs.

Please sign the petition below and help make Australia the first country in the world to end live animal trading.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear MP Wilkie,

You recently announced your decision to propose a bill that would effectively end the import and export of live animals in Australia. This would be the first law of its kind in the world and would save thousands of animals from the cruel conditions live trade causes, including torture, rough handling, and cramped and dangerous transportation.

Thank you for your continued effort to make sure the welfare of animals in Australia improves. I strongly support your bill and hope other members of parliament will reconsider their current positions.

Sincerely,

  3. SHAME ON ON YOU! Stop the cruelty pls! Australia is such a rich and well-developed country which should not abuse animals – THIS IS BARBARIC AND INHUMANE!

  4. SENDING ANIMALS to these EVIL COUNTRIES is MORE THAN ANIMAL ABUSE it is CRIMINAL & the AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT are the CRIMANALS, AUSTRALIA HAS ANIMAL ABUSE LAWS so WHY is it OK for the GOVERNMENT to ALLOW this ABUSE by SENING them to COUNTRIES that HAVE NO LAWS to PROTECT ANIMALS, so this makes the AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT CRIMINALS by ALLOWING THIS ABUSE by SENDING these SHEEP & CATTLE KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THEY WILL BE TORTURED TO DEATH,PLEASE STOP THIS EVIL NOW.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP THESE ANIMALS .NO ANIMAL SHOULD HAVE TO SUFFER SUCH BRUTALITY .SOME OF THESE ANIMALS WERE ALLEGEDLY MEANT TO BE STUNNED INSTEAD THEY WERE BRUTALLY BUTCHERED !!!1 THIS IS NOT THE ACT OF HUMANITY.IF WE RAISE THESE ANIMALS TO BE KILLED WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO MAKE IT AS HUMANE AS POSSIBLE .THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED !!! AS SOMEONE SAID KILL THEM HUMANLY IN NT AND SEND THE MEAT OVER SEAS .

  6. The majority of Australians are against this depravity to our animals -we do not condone this inhumane cruelty and are fighting to stop it-our government wants to keep the trade viable as our farmers are desperate to sell their cattle due to drought etc.the live export trade to countries that have no animal laws -empathy or compassion for animals makes it a hard decision to continue the trade -continual abuse by these cultures -despite our government sending them help and training has changed-nothing -all animals should be killed here -by -our butchers -more humanely and shipped frozen -thus saving the animals a long -terrifying sea journey and the hell awaiting them at it’s end.
