Target: The down feather industry
Goal: Stop the cruel abuse of birds during the production of down products.
Although the animal testing and fur trade industries have been exposed for animal abuse, the down industry has escaped public acknowledgment of its cruel treatment of defenseless animals. To get feathers for down products, such as comforters and coats, employees of the down industry rip feathers from live ducks until the ducks are horrendously wounded. Then, the employees sew the battered ducks with needle and thread. The ducks have no anesthesia and feel every step of this process. Sign this petition to demand that the down industry stop this cruel treatment of animals.
The best down comes from the feathers closest to a bird’s skin. Thus, down industry workers must viciously pluck every feather from the bird to get these coveted down feathers. According to PETA, an undercover video shows down industry employees holding ducks upside down between their knees while the workers plucking fistfuls of feathers from live ducks while the ducks cry out in pain. In one video, an investigator photographed “a worker who was sitting on a goose’s neck in order to prevent her from escaping.”
What’s more, the down industry supports the foie gras and meat industries because, according to PETA, many farmers who raise birds for food make an extra profit by selling their feathers as well. This industry is perhaps even more disturbing because many of these ducks are electrocuted, yet not killed. Then, because of the improper electrocution, the birds are still conscious as their throats are cut and they are plunged into the sizzling hot water of a defeathering tank.
Consumers who do not support this behavior cannot buy from or support the down or meat industry. Sign the petition below to demand that the down industry stop this animal abuse.
Dear down industry producers:
Your treatment of animals is disturbing and unacceptable. Undercover videos show down industry employees holding ducks upside down between their knees while the workers pluck fistfuls of feathers from live ducks, while the ducks cry out in pain. In one video, an investigator photographed “a worker who was sitting on a goose’s neck in order to prevent her from escaping.” Obviously, this system tortures the defenseless duck.
This behavior is appalling. We demand that your industry stop its cruel treatment of animals immediately.
